What Was the Arabic Language Day Slogan That Year?

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) chose the slogan “Arabic: the Language of Poetry and the Arts” as the main title for that year’s World Arabic Language Day celebration. This came from the recognition that Arabic is a wellspring of inspiration for many artists and poets across the ages. Arabic: the Language of Poetry and the Arts

Arabic, the language of poetry and the arts

Our Arabic poetry, unique in the diversity of its forms and styles, is one of the greatest arenas of artistic expression in cultural history. It is a free space for the individual to express love, sorrow, longing, and every theme of the human soul. Our Arabic language has shone through it, adding to its beauty while it, in turn, added to the language’s eloquence.

Among the Arabic arts we can showcase on its world day:

Arabic arts: recitation, oratory, poetry, calligraphy, theater, and creative writing
  • The art of recitation.
  • The art of oratory.
  • The art of poetry.
  • The art of calligraphy.
  • The art of theater.
  • Creative writing.

These are skills that can be practiced and developed within schools and universities.

When Is World Arabic Language Day Celebrated?

I love Arabic

World Arabic Language Day is celebrated on December 18 every year. Arabic is the official language of all Arab countries, given its importance in strengthening Arab national identity at every level. The relevant bodies hold special events over the course of a week to promote the Arabic language and its history, which stretches back more than 1,600 years. Government institutions also launch competitions in poetry and literature to nurture a culture of creative writing among Arab youth — all part of enriching the culture of Arab generations and reinforcing the value of the language of the Dhad around the world, something that enjoys great popularity globally.

The whole world celebrates World Arabic Language Day, this global occasion that falls on December 18 of every year.

It was decided to celebrate the Arabic language on this date because it is the day on which the United Nations General Assembly issued its Resolution No. 3190 in December 1973, which approved the inclusion of Arabic among the official and working languages of the United Nations.

This came after a proposal submitted by the Kingdom of Morocco and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia during the 190th session of UNESCO’s Executive Board.

World Arabic Language Day is the day of the Arab nation, the day of its birth and the home of its greatness and progress, for it is the language of the Qur’an.

It is a crowned queen that binds the hearts of those who speak it, gathering them under its shade, which now extends to every corner of the earth.
