Language and communication skills are among the essential skills for a child’s growth; good communication makes a child more able to integrate into society in a healthy way, as well as to learn at school in the classroom and in their surrounding environment.
Communication includes both speech and language; speech is the verbal means of communication, and language is the way we use rules and styles to express thoughts and feelings.
Because the parent or caregiver is the child’s first teacher, knowing and tracking children’s language development improves parents’ ability to interact with their children — to motivate and guide them in understanding their environment and communicating with it.

Activities to Develop Your Child’s Language Skills
1- Talk to your child a lot:
Perhaps the most important of the activities to develop your child’s language skills is talking to your child frequently. Tell your child about everything going on during the day. You may think your four- or five-year-old won’t understand everything you mention, but a child has a tremendous ability to store phrases and vocabulary properly.
So talk to your child about the details of their day, tell them it’s now time for a bath, and take them to the kitchen,
for example, and tell them about the ingredients and the way you make a cake, and so on.
2- Read to your child a lot:
It is never too early to read to your child. One of the good indicators of future reading success is the amount of time parents spend reading with their children.
One of the most important ways to develop language skills through reading is for parents to keep telling simple stories,
and to move on to harder ones as the child grows older. Reading has a tremendous ability to build a large stock of vocabulary and phrases that the child acquires, and from there language develops correctly in a short time.
3- Help your child correct their vocabulary:
Instead of criticizing the way your child pronounces things, teach them how to say it correctly by repeating the correct phrases. And don’t forget to encourage your child to say the correct words and sentences — this is a sign that the child’s language skills are developing.

4- Beware of your child overusing technology:
Be moderate with your child’s use of TV and computers. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of two should not watch TV at all,
and that older children should watch no more than two hours of high-quality programming per day.
While some educational programs can be useful for children, TV programs
do not interact with children or respond to them — and these are the two motivating factors
children need to learn language. Computer games may be interactive
but they also do not respond to a child’s ideas. So it is best to keep away from technology
at this young age, because it can hinder a child’s language development rather than grow it properly.

5- Take your child outdoors:
Going on field trips, such as to the zoo or for a walk along the streets, helps develop a child’s language skills properly. It is a tremendous opportunity for parents to give their children a great deal of vocabulary and information that enriches the child’s language knowledge. Parents can name all the things the child sees around them,
such as the names of animals and flowers, and learning the colors, and much more.
6- Encourage them to talk about the details:
When you have a conversation with your child, encourage them to speak to you in clear detail. Point to something in the street (for example: a car) and ask them, “What is this?” When they say “a car,”
add more detail to it (“It’s a car, a long blue-and-black car”).
This will build your child’s vocabulary and develop their observation skills. Your child will surely imitate you and learn from you,
so it’s important to practice good grammar and to speak as clearly as possible to help them pick up the words. You can also introduce new words regularly along with an explanation of their meaning.
7- Make sure you have your child’s attention:
Before talking to your child, make sure they are listening to you carefully — and likewise when they talk to you,
listen carefully and focus on their vocabulary and sentence structures, taking care to correct them without rejecting or criticizing.
Also pause after speaking; this gives your child a chance to continue the conversation.
Keep building vocabulary: introduce a new word and give its definition, or use it in a context that is easy to understand,
preferably in a way full of humor and lightheartedness.
8- Focus on introducing opposites:
One of the most important rules for building and developing your child’s language skills is talking about spatial relationships (first, middle and last; right and left), as well as opposites (up and down; inside and outside).

Language development is a fundamental part of your child’s growth. Some children pick it up right away,
while others take some time. With a little patience, you can handle
any developmental issues. However, if you notice a delay in speech and weakness in language skills
after the age of three despite doing these activities,
consult your doctor to check for underlying causes such as hearing impairment.
