Written nasheeds about the Arabic language
  • The poet Hamad bin Khalifa Abu Shahab said in his poem “The Arabic Language”:
“O language of the Qur’an, O sun of guidance — may the Most Merciful protect you from the enemies’ plotting.

Just as you stirred it in a world that knows nothing of you at all.”
  • The poet Hafez Ibrahim says: “I am the sea, and within its depths the pearls lie hidden — so did they ever ask the diver about my shells?

What Great Figures Said About the Arabic Language

Quotes by great figures about the Arabic language
  • Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may God have mercy on him) said: “The Arabic tongue is the emblem of Islam and its people, and languages are among the greatest emblems by which nations are distinguished.”
  • He also said (may God have mercy on him): “It is well known that learning and teaching Arabic is a communal obligation. The early generations used to discipline their children for grammatical errors, so we are commanded — by way of obligation or recommendation — to preserve the Arabic norm and to correct tongues that deviate from it, so that the method of understanding the Book and the Sunnah is preserved for us, along with following the Arabs in their manner of speech. Were people left to their errors, it would be a deficiency and a defect.”
  • Ibn Khaldun, in the forty-fifth chapter of his “Muqaddimah” on the sciences of the Arabic tongue, stated that they have four pillars: lexicon, grammar, rhetoric, and literature. Knowing them is essential for the people of religious law, since the rulings of Islamic law are all derived from the Book and the Sunnah, which are in the language of the Arabs. Those who transmitted them from the Companions and the Successors were Arabs, and those who explained their difficulties did so from their language. So whoever wishes to learn the religious law must know the sciences related to this tongue.
  • Among the words of Malik ibn Anas: “Proper grammatical inflection is the ornament of the tongue, so do not deny your tongues their ornament.”
  • Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani used to say: “Learn grammar, for it is an adornment for the lowly, and abandoning it is a disgrace for the noble.”
  • Al-Rafi’i says: “No people’s language has been humiliated except that they were humiliated, nor has it declined except that their affairs went into decline and retreat. This is why the foreign colonizer imposes his language upon the nation he colonizes, forces it upon them, and makes them feel his greatness through it.”
  • The French scholar Ernest Renan: “The Arabic language began suddenly at the utmost level of perfection — and this is the strangest thing that has occurred in human history, for it has neither infancy nor old age.”
  • The scholar William Wright said: “Arabic has a flexibility and pliability that enable it to adapt to the demands of the age.”
