What You’ll Need
- Colored paper – black for the legs, any color for the body
- Scissors – child-safe scissors recommended
- Glue stick
- Markers or googly eyes – for the spider’s face
- Brass fastener (split pin) – this is the secret to making the legs move!
- Pencil – for tracing circles
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Cut the Body
Trace and cut out two circles from colored paper. One larger circle for the body and one smaller circle for the head. You can use a cup or small bowl as a template.
Step 2: Make the Legs
Cut 8 strips of black paper, each about 15 cm long and 1 cm wide. These will be the spider’s legs. Fold each strip in a zigzag pattern (accordion fold) to give them a 3D springy look.
Step 3: Arrange the Legs
Place 4 folded legs on each side of the large circle (body). Space them evenly so the spider looks balanced.
Step 4: Attach with a Brass Fastener
Stack the legs between the two body circles. Push a brass fastener (split pin) through the center of all layers – the head circle, the legs, and the body circle. Spread the prongs on the back to secure everything together.
Step 5: Add the Face
Glue googly eyes on the head circle, or draw eyes and a mouth with markers. You can add as many eyes as you like – real spiders have eight!
Step 6: Make It Move!
Your movable spider is ready! Gently rotate the top circle and watch the legs spread and move. Hang it on a string for a fun spinning decoration, or attach it to a popsicle stick for a puppet.
